| As the Troop Historian, you are
responsible to the Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. You will work
with the adult leader responsible for publicity and other adults
that are interested in the history of Devon 50.
Devon 50 just celebrated its 73rd birthday. Many
people, and lots of events have become part of our history over the
years. You too are part of that history, from the day you joined.
Knowing our history gives all our scouts a sense of being part of
something important. We have traditions, our own way of doing
things, that set us apart from other troops, and our history often
tells us how these traditions came to be. Our history is a proud
one; we have always been one of the finest troops in our council.
You are responsible for keeping an inventory of
trophies and historical items that the Troop has, and make sure they
stored safely and are not damaged or lost. You should also suggest
additional items that we should include in our collection at the
Greenbar meeting.
You should also gather pictures and facts about
past events of Devon 50 and keep them in scrapbooks, wall displays
or information files. You should have regular contact with the troop
Scribe and the adult publicity chairperson, to get facts, pictures
and descriptions of Devon 50 events. Ask Committee members and other
adults from Devon 50's past if they have ideas on how to collect or
display our history. The Troop Quartermaster is another source of
historical items. He keeps track of Troop equipment, and when an
item is no longer of use, it may be an interesting thing to keep for
our history.
You have an opportunity to get the Devon 50 scouts
excited about our history. Find out what they are interested in; get
them involved in history projects, put on a special display etc. You
can turn to the Troop staff and the adult leaders for help and
advice any time. Everyone wants you to succeed. You have an
important job, and Devon 50 will be a better troop when you do a
good job.
As a Devon 50 Junior Leader, you are expected to
do a short report at the Greenbar meeting on what you did as the
Troop Historian during the past month. What did you achieve, and
what problems are you aware of that should be discussed. This report
will demonstrate that you have performed your leadership duties and
that the time should count towards advancement.
As a leader, you are also an example and role
model for younger scouts. What you do will make a much bigger
impression than anything you say. Live by the Scout Oath and Law.
Wear you uniform correctly. Participate with enthusiasm in Devon 50
activities.
Be someone you would look up to. |
