The Devon 50 Court of Honor was convened
June 14, 2008
by Gerry Cavanaugh, Devon 50 Trustee Chairman
Charge given by J. B. Rettew, Devon 50 Trustee
Fredy Lizandro Tuez-Chumpitaz – #281
Fredy was born at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Chester, PA on July 7, 1990. Fredy and his mother lived with his Godparents for about a year in Chester, and then moved to Berwyn, PA. Here is where he lived with a friend and her family, whom became his extended “American Family”. Fredy grew up with his two “Brothers” Brandon (5) and Jason (3) and in a year or so his “baby sister” Rachel Burriss. They always looked after each other. In 1995, Fredy and his mother moved to an apartment close to the extended family still in Berwyn, PA.
Since he was 11 years old, he has been going to Peru almost every summer to spend time with his mother’s family. Among a few of those times he has taken member of the extended family and Matt Frey (known since Cub Scouts)
Fredy started as a Tiger Cub with pack #113 (with Matt). He enjoyed many of the activities like sleeping at the Franklin Institute and New Jersey State Aquarium. Fredy earned the Arrow of Light in 2002.
Fredy joined Devon 50 in 2002, and was placed in a new scout patrol led by Dave Rupert. After a brief period in a new scout patrol he was moved to Stag Patrol for camp where he met Zach Gavin. In Stag Patrol he was able to become the Assistant Patrol Leader under Zach and then became Patrol Leader with Kurt Rohrbeck being his assistant. He went on many of Devon 50’s campouts like caving (one of the more memorable), canoeing, hiking, skiing, horseback riding, and camping in general.
Several of his most memorable trips would be in his later years as a scout. In 2005 he went to the National Scout Jamboree where he was a Patrol Leader. The truly spectacular experiences were when he climbed to the top of Mt. Washington and along part of the Presidential Ridge. After which was spent time exploring Arcadia National Park with trip Scoutmaster Mr. Pioch. The other was hiking and camping with Mr. Manning and other scouts along part of the Appalachian Trail. Later he spent time with Mr. Scott’s sister at her home on a lake.
In 2003 he didn’t miss a single trip, which earned him the Thomas C. Stillwell Plaque (The scout who demonstrates most enthusiasm in Troop activities). He received the Edward H. Richardson Plaque (That scout who has best fulfilled the traditions of Devon 50) in ’04 and ’05, which got him two free weeks at camp. Also in 2005 he received the Edmund J. Purdy, Jr. Award (to the scout who demonstrates the highest proficiency in scout cookery). Other awards include the World Conservation Badge in 2006, Ad Altare Dei medal (thanks to Mr. Deluccia and Mr. Monnier), and he is currently a Brotherhood Member in the Order of the Arrow.
Fredy’s Eagle Project was to build an outdoor chapel for the Berwyn United Methodist Church, part of which was to also clear an area filled with brush. The majority of the materials was donated or got at a discount. He worked on the project for four weeks with help from many scouts and parents. The Berwyn UMC congregation is very grateful to have an outdoor chapel for worships and spiritual renewal, and will be used by other groups who meet at the church.
Fredy is going to be a senior at CHS. In the fall he will play football and wrestle, which he has been doing this since the 9th grade. He likes to go out with friends, especially to the movies, and enjoys Guitar Hero. He will like to go to a cooking school and learn how to be a chef.
Fredy would like to thank one of his leaders from Pack #113 who has been a big help on his Eagle Project. Mr. Frey provided his time, tools, and other equipment to help Fredy to get his project done. Another big thank you would like to be sent to Ann “Granny” West for her support and guidance. The same also goes for his Scoutmasters Mr. Scott, Mr. Coonley, and Mr. Rohrbeck, Assistant Scoutmasters, parents and fellow scouts who have made all his years at Devon 50 memorable and fun. Finally he would like to thank his mom, who has stood behind him with encouragement, support, and love.
In the years to come Fredy plans to still participate in scout activities, location and time permitting.
