Joshua Smethers - #258

Joshua Smethers, born in Los Gatos, California is currently a senior at Great Valley High School.  Josh, who will graduate this June, has submitted several college applications, but hopes to gain admittance at his top choice the University of Delaware where he plans to pursue a major in business and management.

In California, Joshua was in Pack 447 and Troop 111 for a total of 6 years until he moved with his family to Pennsylvania in 1999.  Josh credits his scoutmaster in Troop 111, Mr. Allen, for making scouting both a challenging and enjoyable experience.

After moving to Pennsylvania, Joshua’s good friend, Evan Gross, helped him land a spot in Troop 50.  With Troop 50, Josh was lucky to find the same quality scouting experiences and organization that he enjoyed with Mr. Allen.  After the first troop meeting Josh knew he had found a new scouting home, that would combine shared responsibility among the scouts and the scoutmaster for running the troop with exciting and fun filled trips.

For Joshua’s Eagle project he helped Mrs. White and Valley Forge National Park keep the trails on Mount Misery from eroding.  With the leadership skills learned over years of scouting, he was able to gather hard working scouts and adults to assist in building water bars to diver water off the trail.

One trip, among many great adventures with Troop 50 was the C & O canal bike ride.  On the last stretch of the last day of the ride, Josh challenged his new troop members’ first aid skills by crashing and breaking his collarbone.  Fortunately, Mr. Scott, Evan, and the other scouts came through and helped Josh though the emergency and get on track for a full recovery.   The accident didn’t dim Josh’s enthusiasm for biking, as he remains an avid mountain biker and president of his local mountain biking club.  Josh currently enhances his love of biking by working in a local bike shop.

Josh expects that biking will remain a life long passion and hopes that some day he will be able to share his enthusiasm for biking and scouts as a scoutmaster of his own troop.

Joshua thanks both his Mom and Dad for encouraging and supporting him through his journey toward Eagle.
